Service overview

University of Virginia School of Nursing programs intertwine education, research, and service. Students, faculty and staff demonstrate these values as they serve locally, regionally and internationally - from building a house for Habitat to providing healthcare to the underserved in southwest Virginia and to conducting a community needs assessment in a developing nation. Over the past year, the
School of Nursing has provided more than 44,000 service hours.
The School cultivates and supports learning through service. Students are given the opportunity to serve others in their course work while developing their nursing and research skills. Service learning projects have included:
Alzheimer patient care in local nursing care facilities
RADAR, which promotes the assessment & prevention of intimate partner violence
Bike Safety presentations to elementary school students
Books for Babies which promotes reading in vulnerable families
Other service projects have encompassed:
Annual Holiday Toy Drive – Student Nurses Association of Virginia (SNAV) raises money to buy and wrap toys to give to children and siblings in the UVA Health System and Kluge Rehabilitation. Santa arrives by Pegasus helicopter to deliver the gifts.
CPR & First Aid training – Certified students teach CPR and First Aid on Grounds, across the Commonwealth, and abroad, including in Peru and
El Salvador .
Breast Cancer Run
Light up the Night – Raises awareness and supports Leukemia & Lymphoma research.
Soldier support – SNAV sends monthly gifts to US soldiers in Iraq &
Afghanistan .

Overall, projects have addressed: community and economic development, English as a second language, health and nutrition, senior citizen service, special needs support for the disabled, youth development and more.
