Travel Support for Students

Susan McDonald Nursing Student Travel Fund

A generous bequest from alumna Susan McDonald (BSN 1967) created the Susan McDonald Nursing Student Travel Fund to assist School of Nursing students who want to attend regional, national or international nursing conferences. Conferences are an important element of nursing professionalism and nursing scholarship, and this fund enables students to become further engaged in aspects of nursing on a regional, national, or international basis. The application can be downloaded OASS Conference Support, and should be submitted by April 15th.

Awards will vary from $100 - $500, and can cover registration fees or assist with travel expenses to attend a major professional conference. Priority is given to those who are making a presentation at the conference (podium, panel, or poster).

The selection committee will be comprised of representatives of the nursing school faculty, as well as an assistant dean from the Office of Admissions and Student Services. The committee will meet once each semester or via email to evaluate requests. Student will submit the application and a copy of the letter indicating that they have been selected as a presenter (if applicable).

PhD Program Grants to Attend SNRS

In some years, the PhD Program and the Doctoral Nursing Student Organization (DNSO) have funds available for students to attend the SNRS conference. Dr. Barbara Parker and the DNSO will distribute information to doctoral students about this option if money is available.

Return to your Alma Mater and Recruit Potential Graduate Students

This program seeks to enhance the visibility of UVa’s graduate programs to prospective applicants by encouraging personal contact with UVa graduate students that are within a year of completing their PhD programs. To cultivate good recruiting relationships with other universities, the VPRGS office will reimburse travel expenses for UVa graduate students to visit their alma mater, give a research seminar, and meet with undergraduate students that are interested in graduate study.

In addition to aiding our recruiting efforts, this program will also benefit graduate students seeking academic careers. Students will have an opportunity to give a seminar presentation and meet with faculty at another university, an experience similar to what they may expect for an academic interview. The specific arrangements for the visit are best left to negotiation at the local level by the student and a faculty member at their alma mater. This program provides up to $1000 for travel reimbursement. No more than one student per academic program will be supported. Priority is granted to those who will speak at HBCUs.

Eligible students need to be at the writing stage of their dissertation.
